Queen Sonja's childhood home

Welcome into the 1930s house where Norway's Queen Sonja grew up.

Step inside a home that holds a significant piece of our royal history.

Built for the Haraldsen family in Oslo in 1935, this house was home to Sonja Haraldsen for most of her life until she married Crown Prince Harald in 1968.

From their secret relationship started in 1959 they had to wait nine years before they received King Olav's approval to marry. During this time, Tuengen allé 1B—Sonja’s mother’s home—was one of the few safe havens where they could meet in private.

The house is built in a functional architectural style, which was very popular in the 1930s. The exterior remains almost unchanged since it was first built, while the interior preserves the decor from 1968 when Sonja moved out to become Norway’s Crown Princess.

In August 2018, the first floor of Queen Sonja’s childhood home was meticulously restored. Since then, the restoration has continued, and today whole house is completely restored.
