Join our tour guide into Christmas-decorated homes in The Town and The Residential Area, or The Rural Area.

During the holiday season you can join us for two different tours in the open air-museum:

Decorated homes in The Town and The Residential Area

How was Christmas celebrated in the 20th century? This tour explores how decorations and traditions evolved throughout the century — what people ate, and which sweets and treats were most popular.

Free entry with an annual pass, but please remember to book a time slot through the ticket link, as the number of places on each tour is limited.

The tour includes visits to several houses, among them Queen Sonja’s childhood home.

Tour times 2–21 December 

  • Tuesday–Friday 2pm (The tour will be in English if English-speaking)
  • Saturday–Sunday 2pm (English) og 3pm (Norwegian) 

Tour times 22 December–13 January

The museum is closed on 24–25 and 31 December and 1, 5 and 12 January

Every day (except closed days) 2pm (English) and 3pm (Norwegian)

  • Duration: 30 minutes.
  • Meeting point: The market place (Torget) in the Town.
  • Show receipt upon arrival in the museum shop.

Decorated homes in The Rural Area

Join us for a walk through the houses in the Rural Area decorated for Christmas! Discover how Christmas was celebrated in the Middle Ages, why we exchange gifts, and who the Christmas gnome really is. The tour takes you inside Årestua, the Parsonage and Øygarden.

  • Meeting point: Årestua Tolstad in the Rural Area
  • Show receipt upon arrival in the museum shop
