Craft – Figure Carving from Scandinavia

Craft – Figure Carving from Scandinavia is a project exploring the art of figure carving and the craftspeople behind it.

The exhibition presents the results of a carving project for figure carvers, whittlers and woodcarvers from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Around 50 works are on display, created by both beginners and experienced craftspeople.

The Scandinavian tradition is characterised by naturalistic figures as well as more caricature-like forms. The figures often have a folk-art style and are brought to life with just a few straight, bold cuts of the knife.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Maihaugen, the Norwegian Crafts Institute and project initiator Rune Hjelen.
